Cooking with Heroes

Marking the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion, Cooking With Heroes stands as a powerful tribute to a century of service, sacrifice and support for the Armed Forces community. Produced in partnership with St James’s House, the project celebrates the extraordinary reach and impact of the Legion, whose work has touched generations of serving personnel, veterans and families across the United Kingdom and beyond. More than a commemorative publication, the book captures the enduring values of courage, resilience and remembrance that continue to define the organisation today.

Published by St James's House, Cooking With Heroes: The Royal British Legion Centenary Cookbook brought together an exceptional collaboration of writers, military chefs and celebrated culinary figures in support of the charity. Drawing inspiration from 100 regions in which the Legion has operated, the beautifully produced hardback combines authentic regional recipes with moving stories of military and civilian heroes nominated by local Royal British Legion communities. Contributions from renowned chefs including Jamie Oliver, Rick Stein and Ainsley Harriott further elevated a publication created to raise funds for the UK’s largest Armed Forces charity.

The scale and spirit of the project made Cooking With Heroes a remarkable achievement. More than 140 contributors from across the military family volunteered their expertise during the challenges of the pandemic to help bring the book to life. Traditional and often forgotten regional dishes were carefully reimagined for contemporary home kitchens, while each accompanying profile honoured individuals whose service and dedication deserved lasting recognition. Officially launched at Claridge’s, the book was celebrated in front of more than 350 distinguished guests, VIPs and senior military figures, reflecting both the prestige of the publication and the profound sense of community behind it.
