Learning to Care

Learning to Care: The Care Home Staff Guide shines a light on the essential, often under-recognised world of care homes and the people who keep them running. Across the UK, care homes play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable individuals and easing pressure on the NHS, a contribution brought into sharp focus during the Covid-19 pandemic. This book captures the importance of that responsibility, highlighting how skilled, compassionate care can transform lives and sustain dignity at every stage of ageing.

At its core, the book brings together behavioural insight, practical instruction and essential fire-safety guidance in a single, accessible volume. Structured into three clear sections – Behavioural Training, Practical Training and Fire Training – it covers everything from empathy, communication and dignity in care, through to clinical awareness, nutrition, mobility and emergency response. Written in clear, straightforward language and supported by helpful illustrations, it serves both experienced professionals and new entrants to the sector, including voluntary carers supporting loved ones at home.

The guide is authored by Sue Brand, whose 40 years of experience in social care underpin every page. A pioneering figure in care training and quality assurance through the RDB Star Rating system, she has long championed dignity, respect and high standards across the sector. Her aim is to educate, elevate and professionalise care work, ensuring staff are equipped not only with skills and knowledge, but also with the confidence to deliver truly compassionate, high-quality support.
