UN75: Sustainable Engineering in Action

Marking the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, UN75: Sustainable Engineering in Action shines a light on the transformative power of engineering in addressing the world’s most urgent challenges. Rooted in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the project celebrates the ingenuity, collaboration and long-term thinking that drive progress across areas including climate action, health, infrastructure and equality. At a time when global cooperation has never been more vital, the publication demonstrates how engineers continue to shape a safer, fairer and more sustainable future for communities worldwide.

Produced by St James’s House in partnership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the beautifully crafted hardback publication brings together world-leading voices from across the engineering and development sectors. Featuring contributions from organisations including UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Health Organization, UN Women and WaterAid, the book explores the far-reaching impact of engineering on society and the environment. Researched, written and designed to the highest of standards, it reflects a shared commitment between the ICE and the United Nations to inspire innovation, encourage knowledge-sharing and promote sustainable development on a global scale.

Exploring the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the book documents how civil engineers, infrastructure specialists, environmental organisations and educational institutions are responding to complex global issues with creativity and purpose. Alongside stories of technological advancement and systems thinking, it highlights the evolving role of engineering in building resilient cities, protecting natural resources and improving quality of life. Published in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, the publication’s digital launch event was attended by more than 800 delegates from around the world and featured keynote speakers, panel discussions and interactive debate that brought the book’s vision of sustainable engineering vividly to life.
