The Royal Air Force was founded on 1 April 1918. To mark the centenary and document the history of the world’s oldest independent air force, we produced this thought-provoking and beautifully designed hardback book and an accompanying event programme. A high-quality, coffee-table-style publication, 100 Years of the RAF provides an in-depth record of the air force past and present, and first-hand insights into the organisation’s future goals and challenges, meeting the brief to “commemorate, celebrate and inspire”.
This official, fully illustrated book documents one of Britain’s most revered institutions; commemorating the achievements of those who have served, recognising the commitment of today’s RAF servicemen and servicewomen, and providing inspiration to the next generation. The RAF’s centenary was marked with a host of major events and celebrations, which 100 Years of the RAF was a major part of, paying tribute to all those who have worn air force blue.
Including a foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier and written by a team of academics, industry experts and RAF personnel, 100 Years of the RAF features rarely seen archival photography. It was launched at an exclusive event on Horse Guards Parade as part of a day of celebration that was attended by thousands and featured a flypast of iconic RAF aircraft over Buckingham Palace.
