Shaping the World

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is one of the industry’s oldest and most respected professional bodies, with a 97,000-strong global membership that spans more than 150 countries. To mark its bicentenary, ICE asked us to produce a high-quality book featuring the results of its ICE 200 campaign to identify 200 projects that tell the story of civil engineering.

The resulting book, Shaping the World, presents a visually rich and compelling account of the work of civil engineers from around the world. Meticulously researched and fully illustrated, it delves into the ideas and innovations behind many of the industry’s most awe-inspiring projects.

From Iron Bridge in Shropshire to the Aswan Dam in Egypt, from the world’s first underground railway to the Halley VI Antarctic Research Station, the publication explores the challenges and pioneering thought behind many of the world’s finest feats of engineering. Shaping the World also provides the reader with a fascinating account of ICE’s history, its current practices and its goals for the future.

“Unputdownable were it not for the difficulty of picking it up … put it on your coffee table and your coffee will grow cold before you look up from its 400 pages.”
