This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, and UN75: Sustainable Engineering in Action highlights how engineering and those sectors related to the built environment are tackling the most pressing challenges of the day, as represented by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The breadth of projects profiled in this book illustrates the extent of the challenge that the SDGs represent, along with the range of responses to that challenge. From fighting poverty, hunger and inequality; to promoting health, peace, education and economic development; to protecting the environment, the subjects addressed reflect what engineers have always done—take on the world’s big problems with solutions large and small.

The second in a series of books produced by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)—one of the world’s oldest and most respected professional engineering associations, with a global membership of over 90,000—and publisher Artifice Press, this book follows the success of previous title Shaping the World: Two Hundred Years of the Institution of Civil Engineers. It includes a host of industry experts and prominent international organisations, including the likes of UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Health Organization and WaterAid, to name but a few.

Accessible to a broad readership, from industry professionals to those with an interest in the built environment and international development, the result is a publication that presents not only the most significant global goals, but also some of the most innovative and influential long-term means of achieving them.
